The Rules

What are they?

For a son? For a brother? For a grandson? For a cousin? For a nephew? For an uncle? For a friend? For a partner? For a writer?

For a human being?

For me?

The basics are common knowledge. The deepest one, how to live, is a mystery.

She says this. He says that. Research proves.

It means nothing to me.

What does it feel like to live this way? is my chaperone.

Sometimes I try to engineer life until I feel like a pinball. It’s depressing.

Too much repetition, noise, pointlessness.

No one knows what to do. Except for you. And you still have no idea.

Every for sure comes with a free second guess.

Just feel. Just pay attention. Just try.

Let the cookie crumble with each bite.

Screw doing it “right”. Do it with an open heart.

Last night I watched the sunset with sea lions.

They play until they’re done playing. Sleep until they’re done sleeping. Swim until they’re done swimming.

Experience is their only rule.

Mine too.
